A Republican state senator has seemingly takes President Obama’s idea for free community college to the next level.
Senate File 90, offered last week in the Iowa Senate, is sponsored by state Sen. Brad Zaun (R-Urbandale). It would direct the Iowa Board of Regents to instruct its universities to waive the tuition and fees for members of the Iowa National Guard.
The free tuition is limited to a maximum of 128 credit-hours, our eight semesters of undergraduate study, and is supplementary to any federal and state financial aid already available. SF 90 also requires the Iowa Department of Veterans Affairs and Iowa College Student Aid Commission must provide relevant information and assistance to the Regent institutions, upon request.
