Last week, Gov. Terry Branstad announced the special election to fill the now-vacant District 23 seat in the Iowa House of Representatives will be held Tuesday, Feb. 10.
Republican Party of Iowa chairman Rep. Jeff Kaufmann subsequently established the special nominating convention will be held at 7 p.m. tonight at the American Legion Post 141 in Glenwood. Nominations will continue to be taken up through the early stages of the convention.
House District 23 includes all of Fremont and Mills counties and the northern two-thirds of Montgomery County. It was previously represented by now-state Sen. Mark Costello, who resigned the seat upon his election to the Iowa Senate.
Costello won a special election last month to fill the Senate District 12 seat formerly held by now-U.S. Sen. Joni Ernst. There were several candidates at the GOP special nominating convention. HD 23 is part of SD 12; however, none of those candidates have declared an interest in running for the House seat.
