State Sen. Charles Schneider (R-West Des Moines) has been selected to participate in a young leaders exchange program this month in China. He will be one of the representatives from the United States to attend the Chinese Association for International Understanding’s second annual Chinese-US-European Young Leaders Exchange Program.
The event is scheduled for Sept. 8-17 in Beijing and Qinghai Province. The purpose of the exchange is to promote mutual understanding and cooperation. Twelve young leaders from China, the United States, France, Germany, Italy, Sweden, and the United Kingdom are expected to participate.
In Beijing, participants will attend workshops on the latest political, economic, and social developments in China. They will also visit with young teachers and students at a university. In Qinghai Province, participants will learn about China’s efforts and progress toward reform. While there, they will stay with local families to learn about daily life in China.
“This is an exciting opportunity, and it comes at an interesting time,” Senator Schneider said. “While differences between our two countries remain, the economic and agricultural ties that bind Iowa and China have grown stronger in recent years, and are likely to increase over time. This experience will help me learn more about China, and will give me an opportunity to promote Iowa values as well.”
