State Rep. Peter Cownie (R-West Des Moines) has reintroduced a constitutional amendment bill seeking to create term limits for members of the General Assembly.
House Joint Resolution 1 would limit both members of the House of Representatives and the Senate to 12 years in office. Representatives could serve no more than six terms, while senators could serve no more than three.
A similar amendment was offered two years ago by Rep. Greg Heartsill (R-Melcher-Dallas), but failed to gain support. Even if the bill is passed, it faces a long and difficult path to become the law of Iowa.
If approved this session, the proposed amendment would be placed on the 2016 and 2018 general election ballots. If approved by voters on both ballots, it could not go into affect until the 2021 legislative session.
There are no lobbyist declarations for the proposed amendment yet.
