Freshman U.S. Sen. Joni Ernst quickly became one of the darlings of the Republican Party with her viral television ad titled “Squeal.” She further cemented her stature as a rising star by soundly defeating former U.S. Rep. Bruce Braley in last November’s General Election, becoming the first woman elected to represent Iowa in Congress.
Now, she will deliver the Republican response to President Obama’s State of the Union Address on Tuesday, Jan. 20. The decision, which was announced earlier today, was made at the GOP legislative retreat being held in Hershey, PA. No hint was given as to what the speech would include, but Ernst was clearly honored to represent her party.
“It is a long way from Red Oak, Iowa, to Washington, DC,” she said. “Growing up on a southwest Iowa farm years and years ago, I never dreamed I would have this opportunity.”
