WWII vets, public invited for Command Retreat at Camp Dodge

ING Command RetreatFrom Press Release

The Iowa National Guard invites World War II veterans of all branches, as well as the public and media, to attend the Camp Dodge Command Retreat ceremony to be held Thursday, May 21 at 2 p.m., at the historic Camp Dodge Pool Complex, 7105 NW 70th Ave., Johnston, Iowa.

The retreat ceremony serves a twofold purpose: it signals the end of the official duty day and serves as a ceremony for paying the proper respect to the flag of the United States.  This year, the ceremony also commemorates the 70th anniversary of the end of WWII in 1945. WWII veterans present for the event will receive reserved seating and be honored for their service during the ceremony.

All of the Iowa National Guard’s major commands will be represented. “This is our opportunity to pay respect to the colors, as well as honor those who have served and who currently serve in the U.S. military,” said Maj. Gen. Tim Orr, Adjutant General for the Iowa National Guard. “There’s no finer way to build camaraderie, fellowship and tradition within the Iowa National Guard. As we come together for time-honored ceremonies such as this, we continue to build upon that sense of history, as both a nation, and as guardians of those freedoms we so enjoy.”
