U.S. Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) has been named a member of the Advisory Council of the Congressional Coalition on Adoption Institute, joining other members of Congress and child welfare advocates to advise the institute on policy efforts to help children.
“I’m glad to work with an organization that does so much to help children achieve a permanent home,” Grassley said. “The institute is a clearinghouse for information on foster care and adoption. It raises awareness on and off Capitol Hill about the need for reform and how the right policies make a difference for children. Having a formal role with this group is an honor.”
According to the Congressional Coalition on Adoption Institute, since its founding in 2001, it “has strived to be an objective and bipartisan resource for federal policymakers regarding the importance of legal permanency for children.”
The organization invited Grassley to serve on its advisory council for his “long‐standing and tremendous leadership in child welfare in the United States Senate,” citing his role in the Adoption and Safe Families Act of 1997, his “steadfast engagement with the Congressional Coalition on Adoption” and his leadership in forming the U.S. Senate Caucus on Foster Youth.
Grassley is the founder and co-chair of the Caucus on Foster Youth, formed in 2009. The caucus is designed to highlight the voices of current and former youth to advise policymakers on the needs and challenges facing these individuals. The caucus has a particular focus on the young adults who are aging out of the system and face educational challenges, financial literacy needs, risks of homelessness and substance abuse and more at a much higher rate than the general population.
